Pier Solar designs solar panel systems for Manchester homes and small businesses. We write the specification, and vetted MCS-certified partners carry out the survey and install. Manchester is cloudier than the south coast, so careful design matters.

Manchester City Council is the planning authority. Most homes can add panels without a planning application, though some areas have extra rules.

Solar output in Manchester and what it means for a 4 kWp system

The EU's PVGIS tool models a well-placed 1 kWp of panels in Manchester at about 890 kWh a year. A typical 4 kWp system is about nine or ten modern panels. At the ideal angle, that adds up to roughly 3,560 kWh a year.

That is lower than London, yet the system still makes more than a typical home's 2,500 kWh a year, according to Ofgem. Real roofs are rarely at the ideal angle, therefore expect a little less. East or west roofs typically still make about 80%.

Panels still generate in winter and on cloudy days. However, December output is typically about a third of July's. For that reason, a battery or a smart EV charger can help you use more of the summer surplus.

Homes, roofs and planning in Manchester

Manchester has many Victorian and Edwardian terraces, plus newer flats in the centre. Each has a different roof, so the design changes street by street. Flats follow a separate set of planning rules, so ask the freeholder and the council.

In England, panels on a pitched roof can stick out no more than 20 cm and must stay below the highest point. On a flat roof, panels can usually rise no more than 60 cm above the roof, under the rules in force since 27 August 2026. In a conservation area, panels on street-facing walls are restricted, so check with the council first. A listed building, however, needs consent before you add solar panels. The council can also set local limits, so ask before you order.

A group-buying scheme called Solar Together Greater Manchester has run before, with the city council among its partners. Whether a new round is open changes over time. Check the council's page for the current position.

How a Pier Solar project runs in Manchester

Pier Solar designs the system and writes the specification, while vetted MCS-certified partners then survey the roof and install it. We cover battery storage systems and EV charger installation for homes and small businesses.

Design comes first. We model your roof, your shading and your daily use, then compare layouts. In cloudier areas we look closely at self-use, because each unit you use at home saves the rate you would otherwise pay.

A competent person must check your roof can carry the panels before installation, because safety comes first. Your installer then fits the system and tests it. Small systems up to 3.68 kW per phase are notified to the network operator within 28 days of installation. Bigger systems need approval before the installer connects them. Your installer normally handles the application or notification, and tells you which route applies.

Your installer should give you an MCS certificate within about ten working days of finishing. You normally need that certificate to be paid under the Smart Export Guarantee. Additionally, Pier Solar arranges an extended workmanship warranty, on top of the manufacturer product warranties.

Costs, savings and export in Manchester

A typical 4 to 4.5 kWp home system typically costs roughly £6,000 to £8,000 installed, based on government cost data. The Energy Saving Trust puts payback in Manchester at around 10 to 11 years in its example. A battery typically costs from about £2,500 up to £10,000, depending on size.

Installing solar panels in a home in Great Britain is currently VAT-free, until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to return to 5%, unless the government changes it. Each supplier sets its own export rate under the Smart Export Guarantee, therefore compare tariffs before you choose.

Our guide to solar battery storage costs and sizing covers the choice in depth. You can also read how the Smart Export Guarantee works. If your roof is being re-covered, compare in-roof and on-roof solar panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar panels work well in Manchester?
Yes. Manchester makes less than the south coast, with PVGIS at about 890 kWh per kWp. Panels still generate on cloudy days, and good design lifts how much you use at home.
How long is payback in Manchester?
The Energy Saving Trust gives 10 to 11 years in its Manchester example. Your own result depends on your use and export rate.
Can I add an EV charger at the same time?
Yes. Home chargers must be smart-capable, and we plan the circuit and the solar together. A new charger circuit is notifiable work, normally handled by a registered electrician.
Do I need planning permission in Manchester?
Most homes can add panels without a planning application, within the limits above. Check with Manchester City Council for conservation areas and listed buildings.
